Windmills are a unique characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Historically, windmills in Holland served many purposes. The most important was pumping water out of the lowlands and back into the rivers beyond the dikes, so the land could be farmed. Today there are still over 1,000 windmills in Holland and some are still being used for drainage.
